Powerful, whole body approach to well-being

What is Rolfing

"Rolfing is a whole body approach to well-being and is unique in the twenty-first century as the most influential and most often copied form of structural integration available."

Rolfing is an incredible form of body work that strives to assess and treat structural misalignment and dysfunction. Despite the thousands of people that have experienced the amazing benefits of Rolfing, it remains a mystery to many. I am frequently asked, “What is Rolfing?”

Named after its founder, Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Rolfing Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that releases and balances unhealthy lines of tension and stress trapped in the body’s connective tissues, called fascia. Dr. Ida P. Rolf obtained her doctorate in biochemistry from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University.

More than fifty years ago, Dr. Rolf recognized that the body is inherently a seamless network of connective tissue, rather than a collection of separate parts. This system of connective tissue surrounds, supports, and penetrates all of the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs. Rolfing works on this web-like complex to release, realign, and balance the whole body. As a direct result of its unprecedented and unequaled ability to dramatically alter posture and structure, Rolfing can create greater ease of movement and enhance the overall functioning of the whole body.

Rolfing works on this complex of fascia to release, realign and balance the whole body, thus resolving discomfort, reducing compensations and creating effortless movement. The sessions also target specific neuromuscular and musculoskeletal patterning in changing movement and behavior following Rolfing.

We use a wide variety of sophisticated hands-on, manual therapies and assessment techniques to address, reduce or eliminate causal strain patterns that create structural imbalances that can cause acute and chronic pain.

The objectives of your Rolfing sessions are:

(1) to determine, joint by joint and segment by segment, the alignment of your musculoskeletal system,

(2) to determine the strain patterns that probably cause misalignment (the misalignments that cause pain and stress) and (3) to reduce or eliminate these strain patterns by working with connective tissue systems and the nervous system.
